These awnings are a subset of the rigid frame awnings sector with the same methods and materials for frame construction, except for the added feature of illumination. Translucency is essential when choosing a fabric, as well as when applying a graphic. Roberts uses several methods of graphic application and clear coat protection and is certified to use such brands as Signtech, 3M, Cooley and Eradilite.
There are special considerations given to the frame production when manufacturing illuminated awnings in order to avoid shadows occurring on the background and graphic. Similarly, distances from the light source affect the even distribution of light within the awning and must be taken into consideration. Shielding the light source within the awning is sometimes a consideration and requires different soffit enclosures to be designed and fitted.
